Do any of you follow the With Gourley & Rust podcast with comedians/actors Paul Rust and Matt Gourley? the whole podcast is them doing like 3+ hour episodes where they breakdown horror movies and each season they will dedicate to a specific franchise or director. Nah no good

Currently watching The Collector. Forgot how much this movie rocks. Don’t have much love for it or The Collection, but I really appreciate how they took the idea of a sequel seriously. Maintains continuity with the first, while expanding elements. Neat ending, too. I think with another director or team behind them, we would be talking horror classic status.

Is City of the Living Dead the one that ends in a factory type setting with a close up of a face getting ripped apart? Been a long time.

If that’s not the one, does anyone know what I’m talking about. Don’t know if it’s Fulci but pretty sure eyetalian. After the face gets ripped up I think it jumps back to the beginning of the story like it was all a dream or is starting again.

Saw Phantasm at a local theater last night. Tried googling the ending because I thought it was strange. The twist wasn’t strange, that made sense. But the whole rest of it seemed pretty insiduous. Instead I found an explainer of the lore of all five movies. Why are there that many sequels? Why are there resistance fighters!?

Also the bald guy with the ponytail in the movie directed it and the rest.

Phantasm has a number of worthless sequels that I have no problem with watching again. The franchise is most notable for setting up stakes and resolutions and then completely undermining them. Watching them back to back would probably be humorous in a “ho hum, nothing matters” sort of way. But they got Reggie and a sense of schlocky style.

Ok so he’s an ice cream truck driver and is a little too physically friendly with the kid at the end. I had wondered if the pedophile subtext was on purpose or just incidental.

I respect Phantasm for what it is but its just not my bag. It's pretty weird. And as to why there are sequels, its because every horror movie gets made into an unnecessary franchise.

I only really like the first one and even that ones strange so I get it. But the Tall Man is an all time horror villain for me. Just creepy and menacing

The sequels aren't the greatest, but they're pretty entertaining and have some good shit in them. The quad-barrel shotgun in part 2 comes to mind.

Woah, I actually got 31 this year, but I'm including movies I saw with the fam, and in the lead-up to October this year. Family Viewing - Haunted Mansion 2003 -- First time watching and surprised that it was decently funny with some good scares at the end.
- Haunted Mansion 2023 -- Liked this much better than I thought I would. Stacked cast.
- Hocus Pocus 1993
- Hocus Pocus 2023 -- We now define a virgin as someone who has never lit a candle.
- Nightmare Before Christmas
- Pirates of the Caribbean 1,2,3 -- more action than horror, but that still counts, right?
- Tremors -- First true horror movie with the kids and I would 100% recommend it as a first for other kids.
- Paranorman -- love this movie more every year.
Solo - The Lure 2015 -- Weird, but a lot of fun. Especially after learning that it was marketed as a regular horror movie in the USA, but as a regular musical in Poland, without mentioning that it's really a fusion of the two.
- The Wailing -- Probably the best possession movie I've ever seen.
- The Empty Man -- suuuuucked. The mini-movie in the beginning was probably the most entertaining part.
- Dracula 1931 -- A lot of fun as a film nerd, but not particularly scary or strong narrative. The final act was particularly lacking. Renfield was pretty creepy though.
- Bram Stoker's Dracula -- Now this is a fucking movie. I loved how weird it was. Gary Oldman acted his ass off, but I definitely felt sorry for Keanu. He just wasn't meant for that movie. Tom Waits made a great Renfield too. I was happy to have watched the OG before this one, it was great seeing the scenes that were a clear homage.
- Alien: Romulus -- Very enjoyable. I haven't watched much beyond the first two movies, so I'm not sure how much they fleshed out about the androids, but I loved how much they focused on AI and robot autonomy.
- Infinity Pool
- House
- Scream 2,3,4
- Bodies, Bodies, Bodies
- Us
- Demons
- The Witch
- Jennifer's Body
- X
- Pearl
- Maxxxine
- Sinister
