Well it didn’t really read hyperbolic at all as you said it was pretty much a guarantee and were otherwise very nuanced and serious.
And the study you quote specifically cautions against generalizing its findings (which you just did anyway) because the sample was so small but for the sake of it, if the general breakdown of 10 school shooters is
2 psychopathic
5 psychotic
3 traumatized
then “only 2 are psychopaths” isn’t really a great argument, because 5 were experiencing psychosis which could stem from a confluence of psych/neuro/etc issues that would require a lot of professional help to address given that their psychosis was so severe they shot up a school. A postpartum psychosis is not really comparable because it occurs in very specific limited circumstances. So of those 10, the majority would require a significant amount of serious rehabilitation in some capacity.
I of course don’t disagree that society failed the kid in the first place because it clearly did in numerous ways, but the damage there was done to the degree it resulted in this, and regardless of the perpetrator’s potential remorse, there still needs to be due diligence both for society’s sake and the shooter’s sake to re-enter society safely for all involved. I’d imagine if someone was truly remorseful after it they’d also be a high suicide risk and experience a lot of PTSD and thus still need significant treatment.
I’m not like advocating the death penalty or anything and I also get grossed out when a comment section is just dogpiling to come up with more severe punishments for any offender. But I was mostly just taken aback that you were basically guaranteeing someone could/should just be immediately returned to normal life with zero professional help and be all good. If it was somehow hyperbolic it didn’t read that way and also probably not the time for hyperbole when mixed with other very straight nuanced discussion in your posts.
